The first time I talked with Nancy & Ben, I knew their wedding day was going to be a special one. They already had a wonderful vision for their day at Sunnywood (her family’s private lake property) that involved many details, but not one detail didn’t have a story behind it. First and foremost, they chose to host their wedding at the lake house that Nancy grew up going to…the same property that had been in the family (and was built by her family) since 1912.
Countless generations had spent time at this lake enjoying it’s blue waters and cool mountain air among the beauty of upstate New York. Not to mention that Ben & Nancy were the 15th couple to celebrate their wedding at the “Big House.” There’s even a heritage board they got to update on their wedding day. Since it was tradition to always get a big family photo at the Big House, we also did a full photo of all the wedding guests in front of the Big House. And, I think I accomplished the most interesting request of my career, as I went out on a boat to get that very photo…it was a sight to see, for sure!
Then, of course there were also many traditions celebrated on Ben’s side. His family has had Steelers season tickets for over 6 decades, so they had Terrible Towels customized for their wedding day and gave them as favors. Ben also worked in the White House, so he wore the Presidential cufflinks that were given to him, and he gave all of his groomsmen special cufflinks that represented their passions.
For their ceremony, Nancy arrived in her great great uncle’s antique Plymouth car, and was driven by her Uncle Jim. Nancy wore her mother’s opal ring for her something blue, and Ben wore his grandfather’s wedding band.
I could go on about all of their intentional details from their day, but what topped it all off was their immense joy. Ben & Nancy’s joy, their friends’ joy, their family’s joy, it was so contagious. They care for their family and loved ones so deeply, and it was more than evident that they were cared for just as deeply.
Ben & Nancy, your joy & courage is a light to those around you. May you have countless blessed years ahead. I am so thankful to have been a part of your day!
