With the windows rolled down and the blooms popping up around town, spring is simply one of the best seasons in Charlottesville, VA. While fall tends to steal the spotlight in this beautiful mountain town, spring brings its own kind of joy—longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of opportunities to get outside with your family.
If you’re anything like me, you’re itching to take the kids out after months of chilly weather, and luckily, Charlottesville (and nearby Richmond!) is packed with incredible family-friendly activities. I’m always looking for fun and effortless things to do with kids in Charlottesville. From nature play spaces to picnic spots, berry picking, and simple day trips, here are some of the best spring activities for families in Charlottesville (and nearby Richmond).

If you haven’t been to Wildrock yet, you’re in for a treat. This natural playscape in Crozet is a dream for kids who love to explore, climb, and get creative in the great outdoors. With open fields, nature trails, and hands-on activities, it’s the perfect way to let your little ones roam free while you soak in those Blue Ridge views.

King Family Vineyards makes the list for a reason—it’s one of the most family-friendly spots around. Parents can sip a glass of rosé while the kids run through the open fields, watch the horses, and play to their hearts’ content. If you visit on a Sunday, you can even catch a polo match!

There’s something so nostalgic about picking fresh strawberries with your kids. Critzer Family Farm is a local favorite, and thankfully they are projected to reopen in 2026 after a tricky crop in 2025. If you’re up for a short drive, Troyer’s in Staunton is another wonderful option with delicious berries. Chiles Peach Orchard is also a classic, offering everything from strawberries to peaches throughout the spring and summer.

Spring is the season of effortless dinners. Pick up Bodo’s Bagels and head to Pen Park or Greenleaf Park for a laid-back evening. The kids get their last bit of energy out before bedtime, and you get a no-mess dinner with a side of fresh air—everyone wins.

Just a short drive from Charlottesville, The Market at Grelen is an absolute gem. It’s a plant nursery, café, orchard, and hiking spot all in one. Order homemade ice cream for the family, and spend the afternoon wandering the trails or picking up a few new plants for your garden.

If you’re up for a day trip, Maymont in Richmond is a must. With stunning gardens, a petting zoo, and plenty of space to roam, it’s the perfect spot for little ones to explore. Afterward, treat yourself to a scoop from Gelati Celesti or Jeni’s in Carytown —because no spring adventure is complete without ice cream!

This hidden gem is worth the trip! Located in Lexington, Seasons Yield Farm hosts “bread days” where you can pick up fresh, homemade bread and pastries. If you’re looking for a unique weekend activity, this cozy farm and bakery is as charming as it gets. You can even stay at the airbnb which is located right above the bakery (pictured below).

Bike rides, playground fun, and ice cream—what’s not to love? Riverview Park is perfect for an afternoon of bike riding and exploring, and a stop at Sugar Bear for a sweet treat afterward makes the outing even better. Bonus tip: bring swimsuits so the kids can splash in the river on warmer days!

For a unique adventure, check out the Blue Ridge Tunnel hike between Afton and Waynesboro. This historic, pitch-black train tunnel is a fun and easy hike for families—just don’t forget your flashlight! And, of course, a stop at Happ Coffee before or after is a must.

There’s something about spring that feels like a fresh start—new routines, new adventures, and more time together.
