What to Wear for Timeless Family Photos

Family

Every time I chat with a new client, the question of what to wear almost always comes up. Whether it’s your very first photo session or your tenth, choosing outfits can feel like one of the trickiest parts.

Even with a clear vision (and great style!), there are still family opinions to balance — because everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing. And honestly? Even after years of photographing families (and dressing my own!), I still find myself puzzling through outfit choices.

So if you’re pulling things together for family photos this fall in Charlottesville or Richmond, I’ve got you covered. These tips are designed to take the stress out of styling so you can feel at ease heading into your session. At the end of the day, outfits are just one piece of the puzzle — the most important thing is loving on your people and being present in the moment. Take a deep breath, pick what feels good, and let me take care of the rest.

Dress for the Season (and location)

Though this may seem like obvious information, it’s a great starting point. Summer begs for light fabrics like linen and fabrics that have movement and can breathe. For fall, cozy layers bring such dimension to your photos. Aiming for spring? Those pops of color, light sweaters and transitional clothing are a great fit.

Also be sure to think through your location. Headed to Chiles Orchard or a field location in Charlottesville? Pick outfits that feel more natural. Headed to UVA or Historic Tuckahoe in Richmond? A more elevated or polished look is a great fit.

Choose a Color Palette

When picking outfits I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” It can also be a great idea to choose “color-families,” such as pastels or jewel tones. A good rule of thumb is to pick 3 or so colors and spread them throughout the family. Don’t be afraid to mix a few subtle patterns or textures like linen knit cardigans. While neutrals do work really well, I’m not going to suggest your family goes for an all beige/oatmeal/natural look unless that’s true to your style and family.

Consider Comfort & Personality

One quick search on Pinterest can bring you a waterfall of inspiration, but honestly, it can all start to feel the same doesn’t it? There’s a reason certain styles and dresses become popular, but if they don’t feel authentic to your family, chances are you won’t love your photos as much.

Clothing is so personal and such an expression, and it tells so much about your family. Yes, dress things up a bit in most instances, but do it in a way that still feels fun and natural to your family.

Children should be able to move, jump and play and you should too! If you’re feeling uncomfortable, it’ll show. Choose outfits you love, and outfits that you can move in.

What Not To Wear

-Bright/neon colors

-Logo or character tees

-Apple watches/hair ties on wrists

-Bright shoes that distract (or clash!)

-Anything too tight, itchy, or uncomfortable

Extra Pro tip

Don’t forget to try on your outfits at least a week ahead of time. There’s nothing worse than picking the perfect outfit only to find it’s the wrong size, they sent the wrong color or you need to exchange it because it’s just not as comfortable as you thought. Plus, sometimes things need a quick steam or iron, and you don’t need that extra task on your plate on session day!
