Photographing Childhood the Way It Actually Looks: A Charlottesville Family Session

Family

There’s something about photographing childhood that isn’t posed or polished — the way kids explore, and play, the ordinary in-between that’s better than the posed. That’s exactly what made this family session at UVA so special.

From the moment we arrived, I could feel the ease each parent carried. They weren’t trying to manage the experience or perfect every detail — they were simply enjoying their children and savoring each wild, fleeting moment. That kind of presence is powerful! Photography can feel like an investment of time and money, and it’s natural to want everything to “go right.” We’ve all been there. But the truth is, the secret to getting it right is in the letting go. In enjoying your children exactly as they are.

That relaxation gave me time with the family to observe them, help lead them when needed and step back in awe as they cuddled, play and chased their children. This season happens once, and it’s a gift to get to pause and soak it all in.

No Need to Force Smiles

One of the most common questions I get from parents is, “What if my kids don’t cooperate for photos?” The answer is simple: they rarely do — and that’s okay.

During this UVA session, we didn’t stop the oldest child from exploring. Instead, I guided the family gently, encouraged curiosity, and let their reactions dictate the moment. Sometimes that meant switching between parents, between kids, or switching up the location to keep things moving. We don’t want anyone feeling stuck or pressured during the session!

Later, the parents shared how much they loved the images because they felt honest — true to their family, not staged or forced.

Playing Over Posing

Childhood rarely offers long stretches of calm and quiet (and when it does, you savor it!)…and I’ll be the first to embrace it.

A session at UVA can mean lots of walking between the gardens, the lawn and all the different historical nooks and architecture. Depending on your child’s age, that movement can feel like a challenge — but with little ones, it’s often the secret ingredient. It gives us a chance to show them something new, a new spot to explore, new steps to try out or new paths to chase.

That movement not only helps us capture a timeless full-family portrait, but also documents the curiosity, energy, and wonder that define these early years!

What Parents Appreciate Later

While I always make space for that classic family photo (and yes, we will get it), parents consistently tell me the images they treasure most are the ones that feel the most them.

That balance — between genuine candids and timeless portraits — is why families are drawn to my work. It’s an honor to document those fleeting dynamics that come alive when a family feels safe enough to let go and simply be together.

Sessions like this become more than photographs; they become moments and memories you can hold onto long after the moment has passed. Whether they’re printed in an album, framed for the living room, or simply revisited on a quiet morning, these images can help you go right back to this season that can often feel amazing, yet overwhelming. Photos have that beautiful way of helping us remember the sweetness of seasons.

Your Family, As You Are

Every family has a rhythm, a way of being together, and that is worth preserving exactly as it is. Capturing childhood the way it actually looks — playful, messy, full of wonder — is about honoring this season in all it’s ordinary glory.

If you’re drawn to this kind of relaxed, lifestyle family photography in Charlottesville, and you want your family to feel seen, I’d love to chat and explore what that could look like for you.
