So often, family photos feel tied to the early years — newborns, first steps, chubby hands and tiny toes. But there’s a quiet magic that shows up later, too. When kids are older. When personalities are fully formed. When laughter sounds different, and the days somehow feel both long and fleeting.

This at-home session with two sisters was a reminder of just how important it is to keep showing up for photos, even when your children aren’t “little” anymore. There were inside jokes, big laughs, and moments of calm in between — the kind of everyday life that can easily go undocumented if you’re waiting for a milestone to justify it.
When children are older, family life often feels full and busier. Schedules overlap, conversations deepen, and time together starts to look different. These years are just as worth remembering!

Photos from this stage tend to carry a different kind of weight. They remind you of who your children are becoming. Of how they fit into your family at this exact moment. (And believe me, you’ll want to come back to this season!)
Having photos taken at home removes the pressure to “make it special.” The special part is already there — in the way siblings are around each other, in shared routines, and in the comfort of familiar spaces. It’s where kids feel most like themselves, which is exactly what makes the images feel honest and true to this season you’re in.

Your kids don’t need to be small (though they will feel small and young when you enjoy these photos years from now!) You don’t need a milestone, and you certainly don’t need a reason. You’re all together under one roof, and that season is fleeting.

One day, these photos will remind you not just of what your family looked like — but of what it felt like to be here, together, in this season.

As families grow, photos often fall lower on the priority list — not because they matter less, but because life gets a little bit wild – a different kind of wild than those newborn days. But these are the years that tend to surprise us later. The years when kids feel grown in the moment, but still so young when we look back. The laughter changes, the connection deepens, and the memories become quieter, yet richer.
These are the images that often mean the most with time — the ones that remind you not just of who your children were, but who you were together.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos — especially now that your kids are a little older — I’d love to help you document this season in a way that feels easy and true to your family. Whether that’s at home, in your backyard, or somewhere that feels familiar, these sessions are always centered around connection and comfort, not perfection.
Whenever it feels right, I’m here.

I’m Amy Cherry—a newborn and family photographer based in Charlottesville, VA who cares deeply about the little things. And I believe they should be savored and documented in all the chaos, the tenderness, and the in-between moments you don’t think to document but never want to forget. I’m here to help you hold onto it all.
I take a limited number of sessions each month (plus, I’m a bit of a planner and always account for possible weather and sick days!) I’d love to set up a time to chat with you, hear your vision and answer any questions!
