Preparing Your Home for a Newborn Session in Charlottesville, VA

A calm, real-life approach to in-home newborn photography

Newborn photo sessions at home are some of my very favorite sessions. There’s nothing quite like documenting those early days at home, when the whole world seems to slow down and your family is settling into a new rhythm together. As a Charlottesville newborn photographer, I specialize in in-home newborn photography that honors real life during those first weeks.

The idea of an in-home newborn session sometimes comes some hesitation — usually questions about preparing your home beforehand. This is such a common worry. I’m here to gently guide you through preparing your home in a way that feels simple and realistic, so you can focus on enjoying your family and let me take care of the rest!

1. Your Home Doesn’t Need to Be “Ready” to Be Photographed

Anytime I get the chance to talk with parents about an in-home newborn session, one of the most common fears is that their home isn’t “perfect” enough — that the nursery isn’t finished, a recent move still feels unsettled, or certain rooms just don’t feel photograph-worthy.

The reality is that family life is just as messy as it is beautiful. Every parent knows that a clean room doesn’t stay clean for long once kids are involved. Sometimes it honestly feels a bit like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos.

As a mama to two wonderfully creative and imaginative girls, I can deeply relate to a home that’s only tidy for a moment and to the messiness that naturally comes with a full and beautiful childhood. And if this is your first baby and the registry gifts are flowing in… that, too, is part of the story. It’s okay to embrace the chaos. We’ve all been there, and we all find our way.

Please don’t worry about the “mess.” It truly doesn’t phase me. I’ve photographed in homes of all sizes and styles, in every season of life. We’re all in this parenting journey together.

2. What Actually Matters

Welcoming a new baby brings a mix of emotions — excitement, exhaustion, tenderness, and adjustment — whether this is your first child or your fifth. You don’t need to hide the sink full of bottles or the cozy corner you’ve made for nursing. Those details are honest reflections of this season.

The last thing I want is for you to feel stressed about achieving a perfectly tidy home before your session. What matters most is the way you love your baby (and a dose of beautiful light).

We’ll plan ahead together. I’ll have you send me a few photos of your space so I can see where the best light is, which rooms feel meaningful to you, and how we can use your home in a way that feels natural and unforced.

3. The Prep I Suggest: A 20-Minute Reset

While your home never needs to be perfect, a brief reset in the spaces we’ll photograph can be helpful. It simply allows the final images to feel calm and uncluttered, so your connection with your baby remains the focus.

This might look like clearing a nightstand in your bedroom, tucking extra items into a basket or closet in the nursery, or making a little breathing room where we’ll spend time. I also recommend opening blinds or curtains and turning off overhead lights so we can soak in that beautiful natural light.

After that? Just be. Rest. Feed your baby. Take a deep breath.

4. Where We’ll Photograph and How I Guide You Through It

I usually ask families to send photos or short videos of the spaces they’re drawn to for their in-home newborn session. Often, this includes the bedroom, living room, or nursery — but sometimes the best light ends up being in an unexpected corner of the dining room, and we’ll happily use that instead.

If a space doesn’t feel quite ready, we can easily move or adjust things together when I arrive. There’s no need to stress ahead of time. While seeing your home beforehand helps me envision the session, I’ll always assess the light again on the day of the session and guide you based on what feels best in real time.

5. You Don’t Need to Host, Perform, or Apologize

If you take only one thing away from this post, let it be this: the very best way to prepare for your newborn session is simply to breathe and focus on loving your baby and your family.

Babies cluster feed. Nights are unpredictable. Sleep is scarce. That is all part of it — and I always meet each family exactly where they are. Being invited into this sacred season is something I never take lightly, and my priority is that you feel comfortable and at ease.

If your baby needs to eat, we pause. If there’s a diaper change or a moment where you need to sit and rest, we take it. No apologies are ever necessary. The greatest gift you can give yourself is the space to settle into the surreal truth that your baby is here.

This season will change you in the very best way — and my hope is that these photographs help you remember not just how it looked, but how it felt.
