You may be a mama who isn’t quite sure if a maternity photo session is something you want, and that’s alright. Not every maternity session has to be the same though. Maybe you envision something that feels a little less polished and little more cozy. Something at home, where you’ll bring your new baby to.

Why At-Home Works For This Season

Maybe it’s in the nursery where you’ll hold and rock your new baby. Maybe you simply want less to plan. You want to get ready and have nowhere to be. You just want to savor this season in a place where you can fully be yourself, somewhere that holds these last quiet weeks before your world looks different.

At-home maternity photo sessions also mean there are countless natural ways to settle in. Places to sit, places to lean, little pockets of light that are so uniquely yours. Plus, when we photograph your newborn session in those same spots, you’ll have images of your home before your little one arrived, and again just after.

What the Session Actually Looks Like

Before your session, I’ll have you send me some videos of your spaces so I can get an idea of how your home is set up and how the light works. Don’t worry about the half-built nursery or boxes of diapers, this is just so I can get an idea of your space! Then, on session day, I’ll arrive and take a look in person. Then we’ll enjoy photographing you with your bump and spouse (and other kiddos if this isn’t your first!).

When to Book Your Maternity Photo Session

I recommend scheduling your maternity photo session for when you are 30-35 weeks pregnant. If this is your first pregnancy, the later part of that range is usually ideal so you have time to truly show your sweet bump. If this isn’t your first pregnancy, sometimes you may show sooner so it’s better to schedule on the earlier side. If you book your newborn session at the same time, you also have the option of adding on a shorter mini maternity session instead, if that fits this season better.

What to Wear for In-Home Maternity Sessions

Being at home is the perfect time to lean into more casual clothing. Many mamas opt for a sweater, button-up, crop top or simple bralette with jeans, while others prefer a slip, a robe or something soft that shows off your bump and beautiful form.

This kind of session tends to resonate most with mamas who want this season remembered quietly, at home, surrounded by the little details that are already part of your everyday life. If this sounds like the kind of maternity session you’ve been picturing, I’d love to hear from you. In my experience, the sessions that feel the most like you are often the ones that happen right where you live. Reach out and let’s talk about your space, your family, and how we can capture this season together, just as it is.

At-home maternity sessions are part of my Signature Session offering, and I’d love to chat about what that could look like for you.

I take a limited number of sessions each month (plus, I’m a bit of a planner and always account for possible weather and sick days!) I’d love to set up a time to chat with you, hear your vision and answer any questions!
