Charlottesville, VA Lifestyle Fall Family Photos

December 2, 2021

A sentiment I’ve heard among mamas recently is that their older kiddos simply aren’t interested in family photos and how it’s just not as easy as it used to be to have family photos made.

And while I completely understand that convincing kids as they are older to take part in family photos can be a challenge, I’d argue that it’s no less important than it was when they were little. Sure, the kids don’t “change” as quickly, but each season with your children is a season to be treasured and documented! Though it may feel hard now, it’s something each of you will treasure as time marches on…as kids move out on their own and even begin their own families.

I’ve been photographing this dear family for 5 years now and it’s been amazing to see the kids grow,  personalities grow and family dynamics change. Each family session has felt unique to their family and I adore getting timeless portraits that so beautifully show the changes in their family each year!

So, you may be thinking: “Ok, Amy,  I hear you, but how do I make it happen?”

Even if your pre-teens or teens aren’t super jazzed about the idea, try to make fun day/activity out of it. My whole goal with family photos is to create photos that truly feel genuine to your family. Sometimes that’s at home, sometimes it’s a local spot you enjoy as a family. Making the session more of a family activity rather than just “saying cheese” is a great start. Then, plan a fun dinner together or activity that everyone can get excited about. (This family had a fun family date night afterwards, and it drives home how fun the experience can be in kids’ minds!)

Though my daughter is still little and has to follow along, I typically plan our family photo session for a day when Jeremy can take off and we can plan something fun as a family after. It takes the pressure off and gives our whole family space to just be together, enjoy the time and celebrate after! (PS – the more stressed you are as parents, the more stressed everyone will feel, so make it fun for yourself too!)

Planning your family photos isn’t meant to be perfect, it’s meant to be a time to celebrate who you are as a family…whatever season that may be. There’s joy & celebration to be found in each unique season!
