Tips for Choosing Your Charlottesville Maternity & Newborn Photographer

Congratulations! You’re expecting your sweet little one and whether this is your first baby or fifth, this season of pregnancy is a sacred one. You may have hired a photographer in the past, or this may be your first time hiring a photographer for your maternity and/or newborn session here in Charlottesville. As we all know,  google can only get you so far, so I wanted to share few tips as you search for the best photographer for your growing family!

Choosing your photography style

There are many photography styles to choose from,  so knowing what you prefer is super helpful as you begin your search. Do you prefer bright and natural images? Images with a lifestyle and relaxed approach? Do you prefer a more dramatic studio style? Or maybe a less posed documentary style that focuses on what’s happening in the moment? Even if you don’t know the  exact words or language to use when describing what you love,  pay attention to what you’re drawn to.

Choosing a photographer that aligns with your vision is key to a successful session  for both of you! For example, my work is timeless, joyful, and nostalgic  with a lifestyle approach. I shoot a combination of digital and film and  my final galleries for clients include a great mix of timeless portraits and candid lifestyle  images that document the season you are  in. For newborn sessions, baby stays in your arms most of the session! (And if  you prefer a more posed, studio session with props, that’s something to consider as you’re searching).

What  type of photography experience excites you?

As with  the range of photography styles, photographers  all  offer their own unique experience  as well. Some offer a luxury experience with hair & makeup, a client closet and in person ordering appointments. Some photographers offer digital files only.

Personally, I’ve found a mix between the two as a perfect fit for my clients! My sessions include a full  set of your digital images, but I also offer heirlooms and print products. I believe in having your photos printed, and I believe in helping you  along the way to make for an effortless and joyful experience! I do help guide clients in what to wear and am with my clients every step  of the way, but I love letting clients express themselves in their own style. ( Yes, finding the “perfect” outfit can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found it also to be such a fun way to prep for the session and make it your own!)

Products & Services

As mentioned above, each photographer may have a different approach on the services and products they offer. Do you love to have things done for you so you can check it off your list? Do you prefer to DIY since you have a vision for your home spaces? Some offer a full-service experience with printed products, and some offer an online/digital only product. 

I offer a mixture, as I  believe that every client should have printed heirlooms  (even if that’s just one lovely print!) along with their session. As busy parents, it can be so hard to check things off your to-do list, so I make the printing process effortless by doing it for you! I offer albums,books, framed  prints, and individual prints so you can choose what’s best for your family! And of course, you’ll also have your digital files so you can backup your photos digitally and print them as you wish.

As for services, does the photographer specialize in newborn?  Do they have a baby’s first year plan or collection to document all those sweet milestones? Do they offer family sessions as well? This is something to consider as you figure out what’s a priority for you. Many of my clients book maternity & newborn sessions together or a Baby’s First Year Collection. But of course, individual sessions are available as well.

Choosing a Lifetime Photographer

Something you may not consider initially is your relationship with your photographer long-term. Many of my clients return each year, and our relationship together grows each year! Watching children grow and documenting each season is such a gift. Not only for me, but for you! Working with the same photographer year after year brings a level of ease & comfort to  the whole family. Everyone knows what to expect, and the nerves can melt away because you feel  like you’re with a  friend rather than a person with a camera. This goes for your kids too! They learn  to love the experience rather than meeting someone new each season or year.
