downtown nashville urban lifestyle baby session by charlottesville and nashville family photographer, amy nicole photography_0004

You may remember this sweet little boy, Elliot, from his newborn session in NYC, where he and his parents live. But, you also may remember Kate & Mark from their wedding at The Bridge Building in downtown Nashville.

When Kate and I initially started talking about the different sessions throughout Elliot’s first year, she mentioned that she wanted to have the sessions take place in the cities that were a part of Kate & Mark’s story. Of course, NYC made sense, as they currently live in the city, but Nashville was also such a special city for them, as they met & married in Music City.

Ironically, it snowed on the day we initially scheduled the session after a string of such warm days in Nashville. We decided to reschedule for the next day since it looked like it would be at least a tad warmer.

So, we met downtown near the same place they had married three years prior almost exactly. What a sweet way to celebrate Elliot’s first 6 months!

wedding heirloom album and heirloom box by charlottesville wedding photographer, amy nicole photography_0004

When you were a child, I’m sure you spent some time thumbing through your parents’ wedding album or wedding prints. Even if you didn’t, maybe you enjoyed flipping through them as you’re planning your very own wedding. One thing I can guarantee is, you didn’t just look at their wedding photographs on Facebook.

After all that time, all that work and all of your investments, simply sharing your photographs on Facebook feels like something is missing. Your wedding photographs truly come alive when they are printed and held. So when your wedding day has come and passed, you can relive your favorite moments and be transported right back to how you felt as you sit with your spouse and hold the very photographs of your wedding day.

Since every collection includes an Heirloom Box, every one of my couples walks away with their very own Heirloom Box. Each Heirloom Box includes 100 4×6 photographs, but many couples also love to have an Heirloom Album to showcase their very favorite photographs and moments from their wedding day. Ben & Nancy chose to do this, and I just loved their classic Heirlooms!

For their Heirloom Box, they chose the Heathered Blue fabric with silver foil. And to match their classic wedding soaked in family tradition, they chose a classic Pinecone brown leather album. You can see a few favorite photos of their classy heirlooms below!

charlottesville in-home newborn session on film by charlottesville newborn & family photographer, amy nicole photography_0013I first met Mallory a few years ago, as I reached out to her because I was visiting Virginia for a friend’s wedding ( The adorable Torrance of Teak & Twine was marrying one of Jeremy’s close college friends). Shortly after some back and forth via email, I found that the wedding I was attending was the same wedding Mallory would be designing the weekend I’d be in town. So, the first time I met Mallory, she was totally in her element and as graceful as you’d imagine. We met for coffee the next time I was in Charlottesville, and we stayed in touch over the next year or so.

Fast forward, Jeremy accepted a job in Charlottesville last year and this beautiful city became our home. Mallory & her husband were welcoming from day one, and we grew our friendship over coffee and great meals.

I still remember the day Mallory shared that she was expecting, and I’m still in awe her sweet girl has already arrived. Mallory and Michael invited me to document the day she arrived, and it was one of the most beautiful experiences and moving beyond words. A few short days later, they welcomed me into their home to document their precious daughter, James, officially home and in their arms, as a family of three.

I’m so very honored to have documented this sweet time for them, and I look forward to documenting James as she grows over the next year! Be sure to follow along to see her over the next year!

You can also see their full gallery & order prints here.

spring engagement session at seven springs richmond virginia by charlottesville wedding photographer, amy nicole photography_0001

For 2-3 weeks straight, it had oddly been at least 60-70 degrees in Virginia. Of course for the weekend of their session, the temperature dropped to typical March temperatures…though it sure didn’t feel like it after all those warm days. But, Kat & Stu didn’t let it phase them. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and gorgeous sunshine at Seven Springs, and they were here to celebrate (and even better, they brought their adorable pup!).

Katharine is from Chicago, and Stu grew up in Georgia. They met at William & Mary, so it was only fitting that he’d ask her to become his wife the weekend of William & Mary’s homecoming…and even more fitting that they plan to wed at the Wren Chapel on William & Mary’s gorgeous campus. Their wedding is set for October, an iconically beautifully month in Virginia and I simply can’t wait to celebrate these two. Their reception will be at the lovely Berkeley Plantation, which they found when exploring during their college years. And they have sweet Alana of Chancey Charm helping design their day, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with together.

Kat & Stu were so warm and welcoming from the second I stepped out the car, and I know that will be one of the themes for their wedding day…a warm & welcoming celebration.

Congratulations, you two! I am so looking forward to celebrating you two as you become husband & wife!

For the last few years, I’ve been doing mini session marathons every fall. They’ve become a favorite for some families as a way to get another smaller family session in for the year, or something perfect for their Christmas card. It’s become something I love doing every single year, as it’s always a treat to see the same families and meet new families.

Something I started to notice though was that I would often hear from families:  “That was so quick and easy!” and I also began to hear “Whew, I’m so glad it was only 20 minutes, I know Jack couldn’t handle more than that right now!”

Since it was such a good experience for so many families, I wanted to dream up something that wasn’t just during the fall. And, since heirlooms are at the heart of what I do, I knew that the typical mini session wasn’t the perfect fit either…. so I am officially announcing Simplicity Sessions!

Want to know more? Scroll down for all the details!

SimplicitySessions

What are Simplicity Sessions?

  • These are shorter sessions offered once a quarter, only 25 minutes long! Short, sweet and simple! Kind of like mini sessions…but better!

Who are they for?

  • Simplicity sessions are for families or couples simply wanting some beautiful portraits (perfect for a mini anniversary session!)

What will they include?

  • They will include 5 digital files of your choice (delivered digitally) and a 4×6 proof of every photo delivered in your gallery. (Because I think you should have beautiful prints to enjoy no matter what session you have!)

When and where will they be offered?

  • Simplicity Sessions will take place in the Charlottesville area seasonally at a pre-determined outdoor location.

What is the difference between a full session and a Simplicity Session?

  • Simplicity sessions will be for those clients looking for quality portraits on a shorter timeline, whereas full sessions will be a more custom experience and include different products & heirlooms.

Are there limited spots?

  • Yes, these sessions will be first come, first served.  There are only 5 spots available for this quarter.

This sounds perfect for my family! How do I sign up?

  • The first set of sessions will be offered April 22-28 (see below for specifics).  Simply contact me to sign up!  I will send you specific time slot options when we chat.

What is the investment and how do I book?

  • Simplicity sessions are 259 + sales tax. A signed contract and 50% is due to reserve your session. The remainder will be due 5 days prior to your session.

After 75+ family sessions in the last couple of years…I’ve learned a lot about what helps a session run extra smoothly. I’ve also gotten quite a few questions over the years, and I thought I’d share some tips here on the blog in case you’re planning for a family session yourself. See below for my top 7 tips!

1. Pick your location.

First off, pick whether you’d like to do an in-home session or a session outdoors at a favorite family place. At-home sessions typically have more of a story feel to them and on-location/outdoor sessions typically have more of a lifestyle & portrait feel to them. Here are a few sessions to give you an idea of the difference between the two (though the two can overlap if we shoot outdoors at your home!):

Matilda at home // Davis Family // Tornabene Family // Avery: One Year // Emmaline: 6 Months

2. Food & Sleep.

Everyone is happier and things run smoother when everyone is well fed and well rested. It makes a world of difference! The best lighting for a session is within 2 hours of sunrise or sunset, so think ahead about nap times & meal times when picking a time that best fits your family.

3. What to wear:

Mom, you get to pick first and go from there! Think coordinating colors rather than matchy, matchy. Don’t worry, no need for jeans and white t-shirts! Pick something that reflects your family and your story. Want some inspiration? I’ve created a board with some outfit ideas. (More outfit inspiration to come soon!)

4. Set those outfits aside.

This is a piggyback on what to wear, but it’s worth noting: pick your outfits a few days ahead and set it aside…no worries about having to wash it last minute or the kids getting things dirty!

5. Don’t stress!

Don’t stress about how your child will act that day, I promise.  When you hire a photographer you trust (this is key!), you get to sit back and let them do the work. Of course, you know your child best! But, I promise their behavior won’t be anything we haven’t seen if they are having a bad day. They are children and that’s beautiful! And don’t worry about yourself, either! Every client I’ve worked with has told me they aren’t good in front of the camera, and I totally understand. It’s not an everyday thing to be in front of the camera, but don’t worry, I’ll take care of you and help you look your best!

6. Enjoy your session!

I know, it seems simple, but this is the most important. It seems like a mute point, but really, don’t get lost in the details and forget to love on your kids well and enjoy having someone else document this season for you. Not only will it actually be a wonderful time for your family, it’ll make the photographs that much better too. And we all want that right?

7. Have your photos printed.

Last but not least, think about how you’d like to enjoy these photographs. Would you prefer to have a book of photos from your session? Or a beautiful wall portrait to enjoy each and every day? Or how about a few prints for that wall gallery? I’m happy to help you in deciding what would be best for family & home!
